Project Overview:
This research-driven initiative, in collaboration with an industrial group in Germany, responds to the company's goal of revitalizing biodiversity within its industrial compound-originally a forested habitat for various pollinators, birds, and small fauna. The site has undergone ecological degradation due to urban expansion and climate-related desertification.
Problem Statement:
Commercially available nesting structures lack adaptability, durability, and ecological intelligence. They are often constructed from fragile wood or heavy concrete and do not cater to the behavioral patterns or diverse needs of species.
Design Approach:
Using bio-based composites and advanced fabrication methods-spearheaded by BioMat's research in both biomimetic principles and biomaterials development and fabrication technologies. The project introduces lightweight, modular, and durable biomimetic habitat systems designed through diverse parametric tools. The system supports the return and adaptation of native species by mimicking natural nesting designs and conditions.
Key Innovations:
Materiality: Bio-composites and advanced fiber placement techniques provide sustainable yet robust structures.
Ecological Fit: Design adaptations were tailored based on ecologist recommendations for multiple species including red mason bees, butterflies, sparrows, and kestrels.
Environmental Goals: Integration of nesting systems with vegetation, shaded zones, and access to water sources within a 100m-900m radius to promote thriving ecosystems.
