ACOUSTIC WEB
This design project was developed at BioMat Studio, University of Stuttgart, as part of the Eco-Room Practice seminar (WS 2015/16) by students Saskia Maier and Robert Steiner. The work explored the creation of an Acoustic Web Panel that combines aesthetic appeal with technical acoustic performance, using sustainable, renewable materials.
The panel design consists of an exterior cover layer with a wide-meshed pattern and an internal core layer composed of several fine-meshed patterns rotated by 90°, enhancing both the visual depth and the sound absorption qualities of the system. The laser-milled exterior panels were fabricated from straw-fibre-reinforced biocomposites, while the internal core was made from engineered straw and cellulose fibre mat. This configuration provides effective acoustic damping and is suitable for interior applications such as sanitary spaces, false ceilings, and free-standing acoustic partitions.
Designed for a circular life cycle, the Acoustic Web Panel can be recycled or composted at the end of its use.
