BIOTON
This project originates from a material innovation developed at BioMat Studio, University of Stuttgart, focusing on multifunctional, bio-based building elements that merge acoustic absorption with thermal insulation. The concept has since been further advanced by BioMat GmbH for potential application in sustainable interior and façade systems.
The panel is designed as a sandwich structure, with perforated outer layers made from natural fibre biocomposites and an inner core of foamed bioplastic. The density of the core can be tailored—ranging from 45 kg/m³ (free expansion) to 50–130 kg/m³ (pent-up plate)—to meet thermal insulation requirements, including sanitary applications.
Both the surface layers and the core are produced using plastic extrusion processing. The biofoam core is generated through physical foaming, a process significantly more environmentally friendly than conventional chemical foaming methods. At the end of its service life, the entire panel can be fully recycled or composted under industrial composting conditions, reinforcing its sustainable credentials.
By integrating performance, sustainability, and recyclability, this innovation demonstrates the potential of bio-based composites to replace conventional insulation and acoustic panels, while providing a single, multifunctional solution for eco-conscious building design.
