BIRAMID
This project originates from a design concept developed at BioMat Studio, University of Stuttgart, focusing on bio-based acoustic systems that combine form, material innovation, and functional performance. The concept, named Biramid, has since been further developed by BioMat GmbH for scalable production and architectural integration.
Biramid is a fully recyclable and compostable acoustic absorber panel constructed as a three-layer sandwich system, each layer featuring distinct perforation patterns. The upper layer is thermoformed into two pyramid-shaped forms, creating a 7 cm air gap that significantly enhances sound absorption. This trapped air enables effective damping of both low- and high-frequency sound waves, while the void volumes beneath the pyramids act as cavity resonators for additional acoustic performance.
The panel is composed of two natural fibre–reinforced elastic thermoplastic (NFRP) layers and a rigid NFRP back layer, balancing flexibility, strength, and durability. Its material composition ensures that the product can be fully recycled or industrially composted, aligning with circular economy principles.
Following the academic phase, BioMat GmbH has been refining the design for manufacturing efficiency, exploring alternative pyramid geometries, and optimizing perforation patterns to target specific acoustic ranges. This positions Biramid as a sustainable, high-performance alternative to conventional acoustic panels, bridging the gap between experimental design and commercial viability.
