CUBE COMB
This project originates from a design concept developed at BioMat Studio, University of Stuttgart, exploring bio-based sandwich panels that unite acoustic absorption with thermal insulation in a single system. The concept, named Cube Comb, has since been further developed by BioMat GmbH for improved performance, manufacturing efficiency, and adaptability to architectural applications.
Cube Comb features an external layer of thermoformed, interlocking inverted cubes, whose edges are linked downwards to the surface of a newly developed foamed bioplastic. This innovative biofoam—produced with densities ranging from 45 kg/m³ (free expansion) to 50–130 kg/m³ (pent-up plate)—provides excellent thermal insulation.
The inverted cube geometry is perforated, enabling sound waves to pass through and activate the air gaps beneath the surface, enhancing acoustic absorption. This dual-function approach provides a lightweight, sustainable alternative to conventional insulation and acoustic cladding products.
Following its academic development, BioMat GmbH has focused on refining thermoforming processes, testing biofoam formulations for durability and fire resistance, and exploring alternative cube geometries for targeted acoustic frequency ranges. These advancements bring Cube Comb closer to real-world deployment as a fully recyclable or industrially compostable interior panel solution.
