INGOT

This project originates from a design concept developed at BioMat Studio, University of Stuttgart, focusing on multifunctional, bio-based panels that combine acoustic absorption with thermal insulation. The concept, named Ignot, has since been further developed by BioMat GmbH for scalability, performance optimization, and architectural integration.

Ignot is a fully recyclable and compostable sandwich panel composed of a three-layered skin and a foamed bioplastic core. The skin layers are connected using thick threads sewn by an industrial 6-axis robotic arm, ensuring precision and structural integrity. The outer skin is made of natural fibre–reinforced thermoplastic elastic polymer, designed with an interlocking multi-layered surface. This configuration creates intermediate gaps that function as trapped resonant cavities, effectively absorbing sound waves.

The core layer is made from foamed bioplastic, providing high-performance thermal insulation while maintaining a bio-based, eco-friendly composition. The entire assembly supports end-of-life recycling or industrial composting, aligning with circular material principles.

Following the academic phase, BioMat GmbH has been optimizing robotic stitching patterns, experimenting with alternative thread materials, and refining foaming parameters to enhance both acoustic range and insulation performance. This positions Ignot as a dual-function, bio-based alternative to conventional insulation and acoustic products, bridging advanced fabrication techniques with market-ready design solutions.
