LA CHAISE
This design project was initiated and conceptually developed at BioMat Studio, University of Stuttgart, with a focus on sustainable material use, computational design, and innovative fabrication methods. The initial prototyping and research were conducted by students Leonard Balas and Patricio Lara during the Material and Structure design studio (SS 2016), tutored by Simon Bechert and supervised by Assoc.-Prof. Dr.-Ing. Arch. Hanaa Dahy.
Rooted in practical material research, the project combined computational simulation, mechanical testing, robotic milling, and manual craftsmanship to explore the structural and aesthetic potential of bending-active wooden components. Two working prototypes demonstrated the ability to produce ergonomically curved, lightweight seating surfaces, while minimizing material usage—making it both environmentally conscious and cost-effective.
The project addressed challenges such as material imperfections (knots, cracks, and shrinkage in thin veneer and plywood), as well as connection methods—testing both riveting and sewing. While sewn joints enhanced the visual expression, they introduced logistical and structural limitations. Riveted connections, in contrast, offered improved feasibility for fabrication.
Following the student-led exploration, BioMat GmbH further refined the concept, adapting it for real-world fabrication and expanding its potential for unique furniture pieces and scalable industrial production. The outcome highlights the importance of integrated material and structural design in shaping sustainable, performative architectural components.
