PLANT AFRICA

Bio-based Thermal Insulating Sandwich Panel originated as a material innovation concept at BioMat Studio, University of Stuttgart, and is now being further developed by BioMat GmbH for broader architectural, furniture, and sanitation applications.

The panel is composed of outer layers made from annually renewable natural fibres reinforced with thermoplastic binders, predominantly bio-mass based. The core consists of foamed bioplastic, producing a biofoam with density ranging from 45 kg/m³ (free expansion) to 50–130 kg/m³ (pent-up plate), ensuring excellent thermal insulation performance.

Manufacturing & Design Flexibility
The external layers can be thermoformed into custom geometries before being bonded to the core, enabling tailored solutions for various interior, sanitary, and furniture applications. This adaptability allows the product to meet both functional and aesthetic requirements.

Sustainability

  • Made entirely from bio-based raw materials.

  • Fully recyclable or industrially compostable, ensuring circular end-of-life options.

By combining renewable fibre composites with high-performance biofoam insulation, this panel provides an eco-conscious alternative to conventional thermal insulation systems, without compromising design flexibility.
