SOUND WAVES
Functionally Graded Perforated Acoustic Sandwich Panel
Developed through a collaborative design process involving architects, acoustic engineers, and material scientists at BioMat Studio, University of Stuttgart, and now further advanced by BioMat GmbH, this acoustic absorber panel combines material innovation with precision engineering.
The panel features functionally graded perforated outer layers composed of natural fibre reinforced bioplastics. These perforations are strategically varied to optimise sound energy redirection and dissipation. Beneath, the core is engineered with a customised internal morphology that enhances acoustic absorption across a broad frequency range.
A key innovation lies in the material continuity: both the core and the external layers are made from the same biocomposite formulation, allowing the entire panel to be recycled without separation. Depending on the binding bioplastic used, the panel can also be composted under industrial conditions, offering a dual end-of-life pathway.
Applications
Acoustic wall cladding
Ceiling panels in performance spaces
Office and residential interior soundproofing
Exhibition and retail environments requiring refined acoustics
This product embodies the integrated approach of BioMat Studio and BioMat GmbH—merging design, material science, and sustainability into a single, high-performance architectural element.
