STECKWABE
Developed at BioMat Studio, University of Stuttgart, and further optimised by BioMat GmbH, this acoustic absorber sandwich panel integrates natural fibre reinforced biocomposite technology with a user-adaptable design.
The panel’s perforated outer layers are dry-connected to an interior honeycomb core—both made from the same biocomposite material—via precision-engineered interlocking connectors. This system eliminates the need for permanent wet bonding, enabling tool-free disassembly and reconfiguration.
Users can adjust the depth and size of the core to fine-tune acoustic performance or adapt the panel to evolving architectural requirements. This interactive functionality not only enhances customisation but also fosters a participatory design approach, engaging end-users in the performance and longevity of the product.
The unified material composition ensures complete recyclability, and, depending on the bioplastic binder used, the panel can also be industrially composted, providing multiple end-of-life scenarios.
Applications
Modular acoustic wall and ceiling systems
Reconfigurable sound absorbers in public or private interiors
Exhibition and event spaces requiring flexible acoustic control
Educational and collaborative environments encouraging user engagement
This design exemplifies BioMat’s mission: merging sustainable materials, advanced manufacturing, and user-centered adaptability into high-performance architectural solutions.
