TRASHELL
Originally developed at BioMat Studio, University of Stuttgart, as part of doctoral research, this prototype explores the architectural potential of green agro-fibre thermoset composites. Measuring 300 × 300 × 2–5 mm, the free-form shell is composed of free-oriented short natural fibres bound with a plant-oil-based thermoset bioresin, achieving a fully bio-based composite with high sustainability performance.
A variety of agro-fibres and agro-based particles sourced from plant residue streams—including coconut shells, cereal straw, and black coal ash (used as an agro-active filler)—were incorporated to create distinct surface textures. Glowing additives were integrated to enable energy-efficient night-time façade illumination, reducing the need for external lighting systems.

Performance & Research
The shell’s matrix composition and surface morphology were specifically engineered for architectural cladding applications, aligning with contemporary sustainable design goals. Initial free-weathering tests demonstrated strong durability and aesthetic retention, indicating high potential for both exterior and interior use.
